How We Got CCTV to a Detached Garage in Sunderland Without Digging a Trench
A detached garage is one of the most common things people want covered, and one of the most common reasons they put CCTV off. The cameras on the house are easy enough. It's getting a cable out to the garage that puts people off, especially when there's a nice block-paved drive in the way.
That was exactly the situation on a job we've just finished in Sunderland. The customer wanted cameras on the house and on the detached garage, all on one system and all on their phone.
The usual options for an outbuilding
When a camera has to go on a building that isn't attached to the house, there are really three ways to get it connected:
Dig a trench and bury a cable. Solid, but it means lifting paving or turf and putting it back.
Run a cable overhead or along walls and fences. Sometimes fine, but it isn't always possible and it doesn't always look tidy.
Use a wireless bridge. A pair of units, one at each end, that pass the camera signal across the gap with no cable between the buildings.
On this job the wireless bridge was the obvious answer. Nobody wants their drive dug up to put a camera on a garage.
What a wireless bridge actually is
It's not the same as plugging a camera into your home Wi-Fi. A point-to-point bridge is a dedicated link between two fixed units that face each other. Because it's only doing one job, it's a lot more dependable than hoping a Wi-Fi camera holds a signal across the garden.
You can see the bridge unit in the photo at the top. It's the white Adalov box on the corner of the fascia, mounted on a bracket right next to one of the turret cameras.
What went in on this job
Once the garage was linked up, everything ran as one system:
8MP 4K cameras
A 4K PTZ camera on the front, covering the drive and the garage doors
A camera on the garage looking down the driveway
A camera on the back garden
AI smart human detection
24/7 recording and audio recording
Night vision
Two-way audio
Siren and warning-light deterrents
All of it on the phone app
The deterrents are there to stop trouble before it starts. If someone comes onto the drive or near the garage, the warning lights and siren can put them off before they get any closer, and the customer can talk to them through the camera from their phone.

When a wireless bridge is the right call
A bridge works best when the two buildings can "see" each other, with a clear line between the two units. You still need power at the outbuilding end for the camera and the bridge, so that's something we look at when we come out to quote. If there's no clear line, or a cable route already exists, we'll tell you straight and go with whatever makes most sense for your property.
